Recording the other character's lines

Recording audio of the other character's is really easy. Just tap on record and read the other character's lines out loud. Slatable will transcribe the first few words so you can keep track of what line is what.

Recording your lines

Then record your line and mute it to keep the timing of your scene on track. To mute you can tap the speaker icon in the line item or tap more ••• and choose mute.

This will leave a silent gap with enough time for you to say your lines when you're recording a Take. Act the scene out as much as possible so the timing matches.

Converting Audio with ScenePartner AI

Use ScenePartner AI to convert all recorded lines. Tap more ••• in the top right of the header.

You'll see the AI voice dropdown. Choose a voice and tap Convert audio.

Convert or delete audio by line

Tap the ••• next to a line, then select Convert Line. If the line has been converted before, it will use your previously chosen voice.

Why only one AI voice per Audition?

At Slatable, we’re committed to helping you submit self tapes that meet professional industry standards. In a traditional in-room audition—or self tape—you’d have just one reader. To keep your audition authentic and focused solely on your performance, we allow only one AI voice per audition.

Choose a new voice for your audition

If you want to change the AI voice for all your lines go to the more ••• menu in the top right header and choose Convert Audio, choose a new voice in the voice chooser footer and tap Convert audio.

Rearrange the order of lines

Tap and hold the line item and drag up or down to change the order of the lines.

Playing SceneAudio When Recording a Take

In the camera tap on2 people with sound wavesto play the audio when recording a Take. The audio will play back immediately on tapping record in Slatable Basic subscription. If you have Slatable Premium you can use a Bluetooth media controller to start and stop the audio. A pop up will ask if you want to play or have the audio paused when you tap record. This way you can have full control over the speed of the scene.

You can adjust the volume of the audio playback with your device's volume button.
You can also use a Bluetooth speaker to play the audio.

Slatable Premium Bluetooth control

If you have Slatable Premium you can control the audio with a Bluetooth media controller (not a shutter button). This way you don't need to leave any gaps between each line as you can pause and play the audio to have full control of the SceneAudio playback. See our store for Bluetooth button we use.

Remember to always follow casting directors instructions to the letter for a self tape. Everyone has a different way of working.

Scene Audio Best Practices

Always practice with the app before a big Audition.

Try out all the features so you know your way around the app before you get an actual Audition.

Always try to find someone to read with.

No one to read with? No problem!

If you absolutely must read with yourself it's best not to try an accent or change your voice or do anything that can be distracting. If you haven't upgraded to ScenePartner AI, why not add a Slate and explain you're reading with yourself? Just remember to always follow casting director instructions with Slates and with your tape and ask your agent and manager what they think would be best.

Make sure the room is as quiet as possible when you record the audio as the "room sound" might be picked up. Recording in a closet with clothes hanging can simulate a recording booth and can give you the dead/flat room sound you want. If you have EarPods you can plug them in and use the mic which can improve the recorded audio. If you're converting with ScenePartner AI includes noise reduction but still try to get your recording as noise free as possible.
